Some species of the genus Penicillium produce beta-lactam antibiotics. Whereas these beta-lactams in their purified form are valuable tools for the treatment of bacterial infections, their excessive use should be avoided for safety reasons. Although allergic reactions are rare and generally overdiagnosed [ 1 ], hypersensitivity to beta-lactams counts among the severe and potentially life-threatening adverse effects of penicillins. Penicillium species are also used for the production of homeopathic preparations [ 2 ], mainly Penicillium chrysogenum Thom . (Trichocomaceae).
