Correct results can be obtained, regardless of particle size, shape, surface structure or colour. Difficulties to separate the particle images from one another can be solved by appropriate measurement procedures. A prerequisite for the measurement are opaque particles. If this condition is met, the size of pellets can be determined, correctly and precisely enough for most purposes. This is demonstrated by the comparison of image analysis results with the particle size of the same objects, obtained from highly enlarged photographs. Measurement parameters optimal for the image analysis system used in this study may be inappropriate for the use with other systems. If a component of the system (e.g. scanner, transparency unit, software) is replaced, the method has to be validated again.
