Barrier Properties of Pharmaceutical Films Made of Cycloolefin Copolymers
With the class of plastics known as cycloolefin copolymers (COC) it is possible for the first time to produce highly effective barrier films entirely from polyolefin. These plastics are halogenfree, colorless, crystalclear and biocompatible. They absorb virtually no water and provide an effective moisture barrier, even in thin layers. Films containing COC as the barrier layer can be processed on conventional blister pack machines without any changes to the molds. Comparative studies carried out by several pharmaceutical companies on blister packs made from different films have shown that COC films protect drugs extremely well from moisture absorption and that this protection is diminished less by extreme climatic conditions than is the case with established blister pack films. For this reason, blister packs for moisturesensitive drugs can be produced of the same COC film for all global regions.
