Behältnisse aus Röhrenglas für flüssige ArzneimittelWechselwirkungen zwischen Glas und Inhalt sowie Maßnahmen zur Erhöhung der Stabilität der Glasoberfläche Dr. Michael Rößler SCHOTT-Rohrglas GmbH, Mitterteich Tubular Glass Containers for Liquid Drugs / Interaction between glass and content as well as measures for increasing the stability of the glass surface Glass is gas-tight and has excellent resistance to aqueous solutions, so that it is superior to most other materials such as plastic or metal. The only things to cause noticeable attack are hydrofluoric acid, highly-concentrated alkali solutions and phosphoric acid. This attack is accelerated by increased temperatures. In spite of its excellent resistance, the surface of the glass still shows certain reactions which must be most carefully observed when the glass is used as primary packing material for the pharmaceutical industry. These chemical interactions may be caused by ion exchange, adsorption or glass attack, and are fundamentally influenced by the manner in which the glass is processed. Standardized procedures are available for testing such reactions. The results of these tests provide an indication of the grade of the glass and allow the quality of the glass surface to be assessed.
