Laxatives Sennae fructus Sennosides HPLC MS The genus Senna belongs to the caesalpiniaceae family and is comprised about 250 species. Two of them are listed in the European Pharmacopoeia: Cassia senna L. (syn. Cassia acutifolia DEL .) also called Alexandrian or Khartoum senna and Cassia angustifolia VAHL , which corresponds to Tinnevelly senna. For these herbal drugs, the following monographs exist: Sennae folium consisting of the dried leaflets [ 1 ], Sennae fructus acutifoliae [ 2 ], Sennae fructus angustifoliae [ 3 ] and Sennae folii extractum siccum normatum [ 4 ].
