Medical devices are an important feature of modern healthcare in many fields. Per definition from the German federal medical device act, medical devices are intended for diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, treatment or alleviation of diseases, injuries, handicaps etc. and “do not achieve their principal intended action in or on the human body by pharmacological, immunological or metabolic means” [ 1 ]. The distinction between medical devices and medicinal products is not always as easy as it may be suggested by this definition.
